Samsung Electronics America has announced the 15th annual Solve for Tomorrow STEM competition’s State Finalists, spotlighting the imaginative and forward-thinking efforts of 300 public middle and high schools from across the U.S.

Each of these institutions has shown exceptional dedication to addressing significant community challenges through the principles of STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

As we delve into the details of this competition, we see a compelling narrative of how students are not only preparing themselves for the future but actively shaping it.

300 public schools were chosen

Building a Legacy of STEM Innovation

Since its inception, Samsung Solve for Tomorrow has highlighted the role of STEM in driving societal progress.

This year, the focus has been on real-world problems demanding innovative solutions.

With approximately 60% of participating schools being Title 1 institutions, the competition emphasizes inclusivity and equitable access to educational resources.

Salman Taufiq, Director of Corporate Marketing at Samsung Electronics America, extolled the program’s impact, noting its receipt of several prestigious awards.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Citizens Award for Best Commitment to Education Program is one such accolade, underscoring the competition’s role in fostering educational advancement and student-driven innovation.

The Power of Problem Solving

These State Finalist teams are leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as AI, 3D printing, and robotics to develop solutions with tangible impacts on local and global scales.

The students’ projects touch on a broad spectrum of critical issues:

  • 🏫 Climate Change: Approximately 33% of the proposals address environmental sustainability, such as using renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, and developing sustainable construction materials.
  • 🏫 Health and Safety: Projects in this domain range from using AI for early cancer detection to creating mental health support tools and improving school safety protocols.
  • 🏫 Social Inclusion: Technological innovations aimed at enhancing accessibility for the visually impaired and improving language translation highlight the students’ commitment to inclusivity.

These diverse projects demonstrate not only the versatility of STEM applications but also the ingenious ways in which young minds harness technology to foster better futures.

Pathway to National Recognition

Each of the State Finalist schools will receive a $2,500 Samsung technology package to aid further in their project development.

Their journey, however, does not end here. By January 9, 2025, these schools will submit detailed project plans.

The 50 best submissions will be selected as State Winners, each awarded with $12,000 in Samsung technology and a video production kit to create their pitch videos.

The competition is structured to recognize various types of excellence:

  • 💵 The Sustainability Innovation Award, worth $25,000, will reward projects that advance sustainable solutions.
  • 💵 The Rising Entrepreneurship Award, also $25,000, will be given to initiatives that have the potential to evolve into sustainable ventures.

Moreover, ten National Finalists will have the opportunity to present their projects at a live event, culminating in three National Winners each securing a $100,000 prize package.

Empowering Students and Communities

The journey of these students is emblematic of a broader movement towards engaging young minds in solving real-world problems through STEM.

It is a testament to the power of education when aligned with innovation and community spirit.

For many students, participating in this competition goes beyond developing a project—it is about cultivating critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a sense of responsibility towards their communities.

The emphasis on pressing issues like climate change, mental health, and educational equity reflects the urgent needs of today’s world and the proactive role that students can play.

By encouraging them to find solutions to these challenges, the competition not only prepares students for future careers in STEM but also helps them become active and informed citizens.
